GBAx.com review of the GP32 12/02/03 (updated on 21st feb 03, again on May 09 and once more on 8th June 04 and yet again on September the 12th 2004!)
Manufacturer: GamePark

Its quite hard to know how to start a review of such an amazing handheld console. Its also tragic that the GP32 is so often compared to the GBA when in all honestly its light years BEYOND the GBA. In fact maybe referring to this as a 'console' is also wrong when its more of a portable computer disguised as a console.

It comes out the box with an English manual, a PC link cable, the GP32 uses PC smartMedia as its Hard disk and has 8meg of internal ram + its (upgradeable) OS, a USB port, a large hires screen (which is SO much better than the GBA one), two stereo speakers (one on each side), a joypad and 6 buttons (4 on front and 2 shoulder buttons), a 3v in socket, a headphone socket, volume control, battery compartment (2xAA for 10-14 hours) & an EXT out port which allows you to do many things including using the gp32 for wireless multiplayer or connecting a mini keyboard. Its upto you how big a smart media card you get, I recommend 64 or 128Megabytes. Older GP32's have a non backlit screen, new ones have a PDA style backlight.

So how does it all work? Well the GP32 connects to your PC's (or Apple Mac's) USB port and from there you can write to its SMC. For example if I want to play Ultimate Doom - I copy over doom.fxe and the doom wad file, then on the gp32 I can see the doom icon appear, and that's it, its now on the GP32 and can be played. The console is open source and fully supports people making their own programs for it, there is a GCC based devkit complete with graphics and sound libs - these are all included.

The built in OS can play MP3 as standard, it can also play DIVX/avi/mpg/wav/ogg/etc files too if you install the player (which is free), making the GP32 a fantastic portable media player, I admit it my SMC has Simpson's, futurama and south park episodes on it!

Portable DivX player - Great for journeys, but not while driving :)

But what a lot of people want the GP32 for is EMULATORS because its ARM CPU can be set upto 166MHZ on our exclusive GBAX GP32 models (compare that with the GBA's 14MHZ) its capable of running pretty much all the old classic consoles and computers, even controversially the Gameboy, Gameboy color & Advance!

Current emulators include SNES, Sega Genesis/SMS/Megadrive, Atari ST, NES, 2600, PC Engine, ZX Spectrum, MAME (only some drivers), Commodore 64, MSX, GBA etc etc. The older systems run perfectly with sound (yes, even the Atari ST) and they run at the CORRECT full resolution - the GP32 screen is easily big enough to do that, really only the SNES (full speed without sound, frame skip with sound) & GBA emus (GBA emu is still being developed, some games run very well) still have issues, but this is expected to change as the emulators make more progress.

In order: Spectrum (Dizzy), MSX (metal Gear), NES (mario), GBA (Contra), Sega (Fantasy Star) & SNES (UN Squadron)

Another amazing emulator is that of the Lucas Arts SCUMMV engine which allows the GP32 to run all the classic adventure games such as the monkey island series, Indiana Jones series, Day of the tentacle, the dig, etc. etc. and yes, it includes the speech sound support (how could you play day of the tentacle without it :)!

'What possible harm could one mutant tentacle do?'
Day of the Tentacle on GP32.

This of course brings me onto PC games, and the often asked question can the GP32 play them? Well... sort of... if someone has ported it. There are currently ports of the usual suspects such as doom, doom 2 and ultimate doom (all full speed), heretic (full speed), rise of the triad (full speed) and Quake (giving a suprisingly playable frame rate at 166mhz).

Then there is the GP32 Linux port which if your familiar with linux will make you happy, it supports the erricson chatboard too so you have keyboard input, being able to run linux apps means there are web browsers word processors etc. there is even a website ran from a GP32! Since this is such a huge extra 'scene' i'll leave it alone in this review, there are plenty of sources online to look up linux apps.

Quake, (the fantastic) Pinball Dreams and Doom.

As mentioned earlier you can install different operating systems on it, there is the excellent windups OS which looks just like windows :) and also ones more devoted to development with debug utils and such, its upto you if you want to install a new OS (they still run all the software), the one that is supplied is usually enough for most people especially with its lovely MP3 player.

Windows style alternative GP32 OS windups.

Another interesting feature is that the GP32 is registered to you and has its own unique ID number so you can password protect and also encrypt its programs so they will only work on your GP32. This was planned to stop copying of commercial GP32 games but it was quickly broken by hackers. Speaking of commercial games you have your usual helping of strange Asian RPG games but also some well cool 'final fight' style games. Rumours of the Capcom series coming soon are getting louder, but I suspect they are waiting for the American Launch.

All commercial GP32 games feature amazing graphics because of the hires screen.

According to Gamepark in Asia you will soon be able to browse the web on the GP32 via a mobile phone connection and also buy various other adaptors and gadgets, I'm not sure if anyone has managed to get the net function working in Europe, but its something cool to look forward to.

And all this for just £129 for the latest BLU model and you can use all those spare SMC cards you have from digital cameras and the like with it :) after using the GP32 you will find it hard to go back to the GBA, sure Nintendo have sold millions of GBAs but you can't play SNES games on it can you? Nor do they support the open source idea. Already 150,000 GP32s have been sold and its not even supposed to have been released outside Korea, this system is getting a fantastic underground following.

Check the prices and buy one here and you can have it in 24 - 48hours worldwide, we are also including a free CD packed full of some of the cool programs mentioned in this review so you won't have to search around online for them.
